I’m so sorry. If someone you love has just died, you don’t need to have everything figured out. These are the first few steps most families take — and most other decisions can wait until you’re ready.
The first few hours

Call 911
Emergency responders will come, and they’ll guide you through what happens next.

If the death was expected
Call the hospice or care team
If your loved one was in hospice care, call the hospice. They’ll help with the next steps, including contacting a funeral home.

Contact a funeral home
A funeral home will care for your loved one and explain the arrangements that need to be made. You don’t have to decide everything in the first call.

Then
Reach the people who matter
Call close family and friends, and let them help. Accepting help is a gift to them, too.

Things that can wait
- Most decisions. The type of service, the date, readings and music can all be decided over the coming days.
- Paperwork. In the days ahead, it helps to gather documents such as a will, any prepaid funeral plans, and military discharge papers for veterans’ benefits.
- Taking care of yourself. Eat something, rest when you can, and let others carry some of the load.
